The Baltimore-based artist Larry "Poncho" Brown, whose figurative paintings of African American life have been a fixture on the gallery circuit since the early 1990s and on the Shades of Color line for nearly as long, takes twelve pages of new work in Poncho Color my Soul 2027 Wall Calendar. Brown studied at the Maryland Institute College of Art and built a career around the kind of saturated, color-forward figurative work that pulls equally from jazz portraiture, Harlem Renaissance painting (Aaron Douglas in particular), and the African textile traditions of kente and adinkra. The featured artwork covers the subjects Brown has returned to over the decades: musicians at work, dancers mid-step, couples in conversation, families gathered. This title comes from Shades of Color.
For Poncho Brown collectors, jazz lovers, Harlem Renaissance reference fans, and anyone whose home gallery already has a Brown piece on the wall, this title is the easy yes. The color carries the work even at calendar scale.
