Sloths move so slowly that algae grow in their fur. They descend from the tree canopy only about once a week to use the bathroom, which is also when they're most vulnerable to predators. Their entire survival strategy is built around staying still and staying hidden. That makes them fascinating to track, and surprisingly hard to study in the field.

Each Fahlo Wander Plush includes a QR code. Scan it with the free Fahlo Animal Tracker app on any Android or Apple device and you'll be connected to a real sloth to follow through the forests of Costa Rica. You'll see its name, location data, and movement patterns as it makes its slow way through the canopy. Sloths are tracked using VHF radio collars that emit a signal researchers follow with directional antennae in the field. Tracking data may be live, delayed, or historical based on safety protocols set by Fahlo's conservation partners.

The Wander Plush is made in partnership with the Sloth Conservation Foundation, which runs the Urban Sloth Project in Costa Rica. The project studies how urban development and habitat fragmentation affect sloth behavior, stress levels, and survival. Urban sloths have to cross roads, navigate power lines, and find food in increasingly fragmented patches of forest. The research informs conservation strategies for sloths in human-dominated landscapes. A portion of every purchase supports that work.

Two-toed and three-toed sloths are both found in Costa Rica, and both are studied through this program. Their slow pace turns out to be one of nature's more elegant energy solutions: they eat leaves, which have almost no nutritional value, and survive entirely by not burning much fuel.
