Polar bears depend on sea ice to hunt. They wait at breathing holes for seals to surface, and they travel enormous distances across the ice between feeding grounds. As Arctic sea ice shrinks earlier each spring and forms later each fall, polar bears are spending more time on land without food. Tracking where they go, and for how long, is one of the most important datasets researchers have for understanding how climate change is affecting the species in real time.
Each Fahlo Venture Plush includes a QR code. Scan it with the free Fahlo Animal Tracker app on any Android or Apple device and you'll be connected to a real polar bear to follow across Arctic sea ice. You'll see the bear's name, location history, and movement data as it travels. Polar bears are tracked via GPS collar, and the collars include a timed release mechanism as well as a saltwater corrosion failsafe that ensures the collar detaches safely even if the release mechanism fails. Tracking data may be live, delayed, or historical based on safety protocols set by Fahlo's conservation partners.
The Venture Plush is made in partnership with Polar Bears International, the leading organization dedicated to polar bear conservation through research, education, and advocacy. Their GPS collar program gives scientists a rare window into the lives of bears in habitat that is dangerous and largely inaccessible to humans. Every purchase directly supports their field research.
There are an estimated 26,000 polar bears left in the wild, spread across 19 subpopulations in the Arctic. Roughly half of those subpopulations are already in decline. The Venture Plush connects you to the effort to understand and slow that trend.
